Coffee beans are grown mainly in four continents, Central & South America, Africa & Arabia, and Asia & the Pacific Rim.
Brazil is the largest exporter of beans, exporting around 28 percent of the worlds output. Coffee beans are the world’s largest traded product after oil, with about 20 million people working in the coffee industry.
Did you know that Coffee beans are not actually grown as beans, but as fruit berries referred to as cherries. It takes years for a coffee tree to become fully matured and ready for harvesting.
There are two main types of coffee beans, the Arabica and Robusta. Three quarters of the beans sold today are of the Arabica type.
Arabica beans are higher quality beans referred to as gourmet coffee. These beans have half the amount of caffeine, with more pleasurable flavours and aromatic properties.
Robusta beans are a lower grade bean; however they are easier to grow and maintain but have more of a harsh flavour and contain more caffeine.
Today there are many different ways of making coffee, some people prefer to just boil the kettle and go for an instant coffee whilst others prefer freshly brewed coffee.
